South Regional

The project architect is The Sellers Group - Eugene (Gene) M. Sellers, Jr., AIA, Architect. The Library is planned to be 36,000 sq ft, and will include a large meeting room, a smaller conference room, a 100-seat auditorium, and study rooms for groups of 2 - 4. The Library will house a book and a-v collection, a 14 workstation Technology lab, computers for public use, wireless Internet access for those bringing in their own laptops or PDAs, self-checkout capabilities, and a drive-thru window for returning books or picking up books on hold. The Library will also feature a themed children's department and separate children's storytelling room, an exciting teen space, family friendly restrooms, and a cafe/vending area. A quiet reading area is also in the plans.

Will there be a genealogy room at this southside branch. If so will it have micro film of census records like the Baton Rouge Bluebonnet branch?

Most of our genealogy collection and materials will remain at the Main Library, primarily due to space considerations.* The North Regional will have a genealogy section. South Regional will have some genealogy materials. The public can access online genealogy and census materials from our library computers at any of our locations. South Regional will also have multiple small and large meeting spaces, including an auditorium, which could be used for genealogy programs and smaller meetings or collaborations.

*The Main Library renovation planning has begun and, space and funding permitting, we are hoping to have a reading room that would incorporate the genealogy and Louisiana collections, seating, tables and computers to use in research, as well as a display area. We hope to begin these renovations in 2009.

How do I reserve a study room? Would I need to have a library card in order to reserve one?

Currently you do not need a library card to reserve a study room. You can reserve one up to a month in advance by contacting our staff at 981-1028 or you can private message your contact information on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/LafayettePublicLibrary

Rooms can be used for 2 hours a day; the room may be able to be used longer if no one else is waiting on the room. Note that you cannot charge anyone for a service provided while using a library study room. For example, using the room to provide free tutoring services is appropriate but using the room to charge someone to tutor is not. We have rooms with table/chair setup for 4 or 8 and rooms with no table but laptop arm chairs for 4 or 8.

You are eligible for a card if you live, work, or go to school in Lafayette Parish. You can access our electronic books, library databases, and other services with your library card.
